Learning Theories: An Educational Perspective (5th Edition)

First day all over

I found out yesterday that I should be getting tenure at the end of this school year! First I get tenure track when someone resigned to go work in Mexico, and now I find out that my last two years are being counted! Can't get much better than this.

I hate the size of my classes. There should be a law that you can't have more than 20 eigth graders in a foreign language class. I have somewhere around 30... It will take me like 2 months to do the proficiency speaking tasks!!! Granted that it's 8 months until then, but I also have to get them prepared, and it makes me nervous having that many. I would much rather have 7th graders in this case. Their speaking tasks are so much easier!

I'll now return to studying about learning theories for my Master's class. Such fun...

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Taking a break!

I, as usual, have absolutely no desire to do anything that I should be doing for work. I have to have my lesson book ready by the end of the week for 2 different administrators to see, and I actually don't remember what I did last week... or for the last ..... 3 weeks for that matter. NICE! And I have a toooooon of practice E.L.A. exams that must be graded by Friday. 9 more school days, and then 10 days off. Soooooo good! Frank is supposedly taking time off, so we'll see what we do. I'm not particular, I just want to get to spend a lot of time with him.

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's been so long since I've written! Someday I'll update. Year number 2 of teaching is definitely going a lot smoother than year 1.

Happy Holiday
